'Tern' Bulverhythe

A plate on the counter reads 'Tern Gt. Yarmouth'. If so, this boat was registered IH93 as a potter in 1978 at Ipswich with Felixstowe as the home port, although most probably built by either R.Lower & Son of Newhaven or Harry Phillips of Rye. The bow profile looks similar to RX130 Gratitude built by the latter, and Tern is most definitely a south coast beach punt. Its very difficult to trace the history of these little boats but from available records it appears she ceased to fish on the East Coast in 1996 and was returned to Sussex. Directly in front of Tern is the winding gear with a small diesel engine operating the hawser by which she would have been winched up the beach.
