The Capri Mk.III was referred to internally as project Carla with a substantial update from the Mk,II including a new four head lamp nose. The Mk.III was no longer produced in Dagenham, with production now centred in Genk, Belgium and Cologne, Germany despite the UK being the models last surviving strong market, the Mk.III featured improvements in aerodynamics and ubsequent performance and economy. As sales began to fall away the range contracted with the 1300 dropped in 1982 and the 3,0ltr making way for the 2.8ltr a few months earlier. The 1600 and 2000 litre survived with the 2.8i till the final months.

From November 1984 onwards only RHD versions were produced and only sold in Britain. The normally aspirated 1.6 and 2.0 variants were rebranded with a new trim level – "Laser" – which featured a fully populated instrument pod, leather gear lever, leather steering wheel, four-spoke alloy wheels as used on the S models, an electric aerial and colour-coded grille and mirrors.
