Daniel of Ealing has announced it will be closing its doors permanently after being a staple for 124 years on the high street. The department store is now holding a big clearance sale, with discounts of up to 50% off as it clears out all of its remaining stock though it has not yet said exactly when it will be closing. Located on Uxbridge Road in Ealing, the store offers a large selection of furniture, beds and carpets as well as clothing and is the official stockists of brands such as Dunlopillo, Relyon and Mammoth.
Daniel of Ealing said in a statement: "Rising costs and challenging market conditions have led to the difficult decision to close the historic store." The store added: "Daniel of Ealing has been a nostalgic pillar of the community for over a century, and while this chapter is sadly coming to an end, the store’s legacy will live on fondly in the memories of its customers."
The Daniel of Windsor flagship store will stay, in addition to the online store, danielstores.co.uk.
The West Ealing store was founded in 1901 and has even been given a royal warrant for supplying gifts to the Royal Household.
Founded by Walter James Daniel, the store has remained a family-run business throughout the years from being a small draper's shop at at 96 Uxbridge Road to the department store it has become today.
In the early days, Walter struggled to pay rent and even tried to return the keys to his landlord but the latter encouraged him to persist, the Ealing Times reports.
The business grew, and the store even had a restaurant at its peak.
The retailer expanded to Windsor, Reading, Newbury, Cardiff, Ebbw Vale and Chiswick.
The company remains family-owned to this day, now led by Peter Daniel as Chairman, and other family members are working in various areas of the company.
Many beds from big brands like Dunlopillo and Sleepeezee are going at half price in the final clearance sale.
