A British boy has been seriously injured after smashing into a hotel window in Spain. The child, aged eight, is believed to have "run through" a pane of glass in a freak accident at about midday on Wednesday (May 14).

Local reports said he was hurt after running along a corridor before hitting the glass. He suffered deep cuts and was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation. His parents were with him at the time. The operation is understood to have been carried out at Son Espases University Hospital in Palma, the capital of Majorca. The hotel hasn't been identified.

Spanish police were called to the scene and have launced an investigation into what happened. There is no suggestion of fault on the part of the hotel at all at this stage.

Nobody at the hospital could be reached on Wednesday (May 15) for an update on the boy's condition.

It comes just months after a girl, 11, was among 10 skiers injured after a chairlift derailed at a ski station in Spain, flinging riders 50ft from their chairs and leaving some hanging upside down.

The horrific incident was at Astun Ski Resort in the heart of the Aragon Valley in north-eastern Spain.

Several people were trapped as emergency services rushed to the scene to rescue those caught up in the holiday horror.

Two women, both aged 18, were in critical conditions and sent for medical treatment at an ICU.

One of the women, who was said to have sustained the most severe injuries, was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The 11-year-old girl and a woman aged 67 were among the injured skiers rushed to hospital. It is understood they suffered mild injuries.

Initial reports had suggested that 30 people had been injured and nine skiers sustained serious injuries, but the toll was later confirmed to be much lower.

Five helicopters and a dozen ambulances were dispatched to the resort to ferry the injured to nearby hospitals, according to local media.

Aragon Government's head of emergencies Miguel Angel Clavero said the incident was caused by a mechanical failure which "caused loss of tension and led to chairlifts falling". He said about 80 people were left stranded.
