Kris Marshall has opened up about his former role as the lead detective in BBC series Death in Paradise, ahead of the return of spin-off show Beyond Paradise.

Kris portrayed DI Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise from 2014 until 2017. He then reprised the role in Beyond Paradise, which launched back in 2023 and is now due to return to TV screens with a third series.

The actor has revealed that while he was immediately keen to take on the role of DI Goodman when it was offered in 2014, he had actually never watched Death in Paradise.

In a candid new interview, Kris admitted to the i Paper: “I’m more of a documentaries and sports guy."

However, his wife Hannah was a big fan of the BBC series and ultimately encouraged him to take on the role, despite her being pregnant with the couple's first child at the time.

Kris will now be back on TV screens in the new series of Beyond Paradise, which launches on BBC One on Friday, 28 March.

He's teased what viewers can expect to see from Humphrey this time round, with many invested in the DI's romance with Martha and what challenges the couple will face next.

Teasing the new series, Kris revealed to Radio Times: "Humphrey and Martha have their own challenges. And that kind of storyline, where they may have been fractured, has been done. And I don't think that we need to revisit that.

"But also, I think that Humphrey and Martha are quite unique in terms of a sort of main protagonist couple, who don't have these massive indiscretions and dramas between them."

Series three will see some drama for the couple however, as Martha's ex Archie Hughes (Jamie Bamber), who once got into a physical altercation with Humphrey, will be making a return to Saint Marie.

Other returning characters include Reverend Kate (Chizzy Akudolu), Josh Woods (Chris Jenks), Nurse Lucy (Eva Feiler) and Hannah (Amalia Vitale).

Beyond Paradise season three will also welcome guest stars including Hugh Dennis, Kevin McNally, Caroline Quentin, Gabby Best and Steve Oram.

Beyond Paradise series three premieres on Friday, 28 March on BBC One at 8pm
