An iconic UK chain renowned for being a leading sports retailer with over 500 locations across the UK has announced it is to close one of their flagship stores. The shutters will be pulled down on Sports Direct's huge shop in Glasgow's Silverburn with sad customers believing this is a sign of the shopping centre “going downhill”.
Signs were recently plastered across the store's windows announcing that it will be closing its doors. The signs said: "Closing down. 20 per cent off full price, exclusions apply." However, if shoppers are quick, you can grab a bargain before it goes. The shop has launched a huge 20% off sale giving customers a final chance to shop their favourite sport items before it waves goodbye to the shopping centre.
Disappointed shoppers took to social media to express their sadness at the store closing.
One said: "That's sad. Another empty space that will be taken up by a rubbish store out of most people's reach or an existing store will move into the space, playing musical chairs.
"It's sad to see Silverburn going downhill, used to be so vibrant and accessible."
A second added: "Sad for staff losing there jobs."
It is unknown at this time when the store will pull its shutters down for the final time.
However, shoppers in Glasgow can find other Sports Direct stores on Argyle Street and at the Forge Shopping Centre.
Known for being 'one of the biggest sporting retailers' in the country, the company was founded in 1982 by Mike Ashley.
The 60-year-old entrepreneur opened the first single store in Maidenhead, England.
Known for offering discounted sportswear, footwear, and equipment, Sports Direct carries major brands like Nike, Adidas, and its in-house labels such as Slazenger and Lonsdale.
Despite the closure Sports Direct remains a dominant face along the high street with a total of 715 stores across the UK, Europe, and Malaysia.
