This quiet village is just a stone's throw away from a major city.

For those of us who love to travel, heading to other countries to find stunning architecture and hidden gems away from bustling cities is all part of the magic of exploring somewhere new.

But you don't have to jet off across the globe to find some stunning locations that most people don't know about. There are countless idyllic places right here in the UK that you could explore on your next staycation trip.

One small village, in particular, has even been dubbed the "most magical village" in the UK - and it's only 40 minutes away from a major city, making it the perfect destination for those looking for a short break away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

A viral video on TikTok shone a light on the little-known village of Culross, a former royal burgh in Fife, Scotland, that is just a short distance from both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The video, shared by Yazzy, described Culross as "the most magical wee village in Scotland" and was full of footage of the location's cobbled streets, brightly coloured buildings, and historic courtyards.

Culross is around 30 miles away from Glasgow, which is estimated to take 40 minutes in a car. It is closer to Edinburgh at around 24 miles away, but it would take you closer to an hour to travel that distance due to not being directly on the motorway.

The village is Scotland's most complete example of a 17th and 18th-century burgh, which is the name for an autonomous municipal corporation in Scotland. Burghs were typically under the protection of a castle and usually had a marketplace - and you can see both of those when you visit the picturesque Culross.

Culross Palace is open from 10am to 4pm at this time of year for tourists to explore, and even features a small market stall in the palace gardens where you can buy freshly grown seasonal herbs, fruit, and vegetables.

And if the charming village looks familiar to you, that's probably because you've seen it before. Culross is often used as a film and television location and has most famously been used many times in the hit US series Outlander.

The village also features a quaint cafe and occasionally runs events - including an after-hours tour of Culross Palace called The Spirits of the Palace, which happens once a month.

Tourists who have been to Culross have left gleaming reviews for the village on TripAdvisor, where it currently has a 4.6-star rating. Some describe the location as like "stepping back in time", although others say it does get "overrun with tourists" during the peak season and on weekends.

One person said: "Really attractive little village, with beautiful buildings. Really well kept. Lots of interesting places, a pub, little cafes. Great views of the sea and lovely walking path."

Another added: "The village is absolutely beautiful - it is like stepping back in time. The palace is quite amazing and is a must-see. The gardens are very impressive built up, as it is, on many terraces."
