Queen Elizabeth II's beloved grandson Lord Charles O'Hagan has died aged 79. An inquest has revealed that he died at North Devon Hospital on March 23 after suffering a subdural haematoma.

He is known to have had a history of falls and states of confusion. Lord Charles is known to have formerly served as a Member of European Parliament (MEP) for Devon for two stints from 1973-1975 and from 1979-1994. The late Queen, who died aged 96 in 2022, become his godparent when she was still known as Princess Elizabeth.

Known to have been the 4th Baron O'Hagan, Charles was born in 1945 and lived at Beaford near Winkleigh, Devon.

He was a member of the House of Lords from December 1961 until November 1999 when he was excluded. As well as being her godson, Charles served as a Page Honour to the late Queen Elizabeth between 1959 and 1962.

He was pictured carrying Queen Elizabeth's train before the Order of the Garter ceremony at St George's Chapel in Windsor in June 1960.

Lord O'Hagan's grandfather, Maurice Towneley-O'Hagan, 3rd Baron O'Hagan, was a well-known UK politician. After his own father died in 1955, Lord O'Hagan inherited the family title at the age of 16 - following his grandfather's death in 1961.

He became an Independent MEP in December 1972, before taking his seat on the European Parliament on New Year's Day in 1973. After a joint decision by the Conservatives and Labour to stop appointing Independents and Liberals to the European Parliament, he lost his seat in July 1975. He later returned as an MEP for Devon in 1979 - until his resignation in 1994. During his life, Lord O'Hagan had been married three times.
