A huge snow barrage could hit the UK in mid-April, weather maps generated by WXCharts on suggest. The forecaster, which uses Met Desk data, say there is a chance of snow hitting a significant number of counties across the nation on April 17. Maps of the UK shaded in white to indicate snow falling suggest the chilling conditions could hit as north as Wick and as south as Southampton, with only very few regions escaping the barrage.

Cold is expected to accompany the snow, with areas in Scotland experiencing temperatures as low as -3C, according to the weather maps. The snow forecast comes as temperatures have been increasing in Britain in recent days.

According to the WXCharts maps, Plymouth and parts of Manchester as well as a patch of southern Scotland will just about miss the brutal snow hit in mid-April.

Along with the rain, a spot of blue covers Devon and Cornwall on the map indicating the rain that is also expected this month. The cold weather is not expected to hang around for too long.

The latest forecast, showing temperatures dip to around -5C are in stark contrast to earlier maps showing a mini-heatwave. This suggests Britain is in line for a highly unsettled April with contrasting jet streams hitting the UK.

Netweather maps, meanwhile, show snow could hit in the days before WXChart's forecast, saying April 15 could see a cold front sweeping UK.

The Met Office's long range weather forecast for April 17 and May 1 does warn of an "unsettled period" in the month of April, and notes that "interludes of rain and showers" will hit regions at times.

The long range forecast states: "A return to high pressure is signalled later in the month, bringing mainly dry and fine weather. Temperatures are likely to be average at first, before climbing up to above average later in the more settled weather."

Therefore, the nation is predicted to experience "some warm or very warm days", but due to the unsetlled conditions some "chilly nights" as well.

Counties which will not be hit by snow:

  • Ayshire
  • Cornwall
  • Devon
  • Lanarkshire
  • Shropshire
  • Worchestershire
