For many Brits, ditching the wet and grey skies of the UK for the sunnier climates Spain is the dream. It’s not hard to see why the southern European country has become such a popular destination for expats.

With an average of 3,000 sunshine hours, almost double that of the UK, picturesque beaches, delicious food and a slower pace of life, it can make a refreshing change. However, while life may seem perfect on the outside, there are downsides to living in Spain. One British expat has taken to TikTok to share the negative aspects of living in a seemingly idyllic coastal town.

Georgia, from Geo in Spain, admitted that while she loves her home in Malaga, "there are some things I don't like”.

The coastal city's popularity with tourists proved a major sticking point - especially during the summer. Pubs and restaurants become "super busy" with visitors during this peak period, meaning locals struggle to find seating.

"You're probably going to have to make reservations for the places you would normally go without any trouble," the expat warned.

Georgia continued: "It's the same with the beaches and pools. Obviously, everything gets super busy, so it's good if you can plan your day out."

She recommended visiting popular spots earlier in the morning, before the crowds of tourists descend.

"Or if you have a pool at home, just try to find solutions to get away from those problems," she said.

Another issue during the peak tourist season is parking: "Parking in summer is horrendous - and I am just trying to go to work.

"I can never find parking because people come on holiday, leave their car there and don't move it for a week."

Georgia also revealed that renting a parking space is both difficult and expensive.

It’s not just the expats that are struggling, either. Spanish locals have also voiced their concerns about overtourism in the country, largely through protests.

This weekend, tens of thousands are set to take to the streets in an incredible 40 cities across Spain. United under the slogan "Let’s end the housing business", the protests will begin in the capital, Madrid, followed by the likes of Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, the Balearics and Canary Islands.
