With spring well underway, Britons are looking for the best last-minute getaways that won’t break the bank. That’s why a new study has compiled the nicest spots in the country for a relaxing weekend away that offers the best value for money.

Credit card brand Aqua analysed the cost of accommodation, monthly Google searches, average rainfall and the average temperature in each location to come up with a ranking of the most budget-friendly staycations. And it turns out, Plymouth is the most affordable location among the mot popular options, with a weekend getaway for two costing just £65. Plymouth's iconic waterfront is home to the historic Royal William Yard, a unique collection of naval buildings now housing boutique shops, restaurants, and galleries.

Visitors can explore the National Marine Aquarium, where the fascinating marine life of the English Channel is showcased in an immersive, family-friendly setting.

For those keen on history, the Mayflower Steps mark the spot where the Pilgrims departed for America in 1620, adding an important historical undertone to the city.

The nearby Dartmoor National Park is easy to reach from Plymouth and perfectly exemplifies the rural beauty of Devon's countryside, allowing weekend visitors to go for a nice Sunday walk and spot some wildlife.

Travel website Tripadvisor reviews often sing this stunning city’s praises, with one user claiming it’s “UK’s most wonderful city”.

Reviewer Eunny added: “I have travelled to most cities in the UK and Plymouth is by far the best! Barbican seafront and harbour is beautiful, UK's version of San Diego.”

Mum39 wrote: “Lots of boat trips, good walking, and buses to get you around when hills become hard work!

“Numerous cafes to suit every taste, and excellent development going on at Royal William Yard bringing old buildings back to life.”

CharlotteFoxy echoed: “Such a gorgeous place to be, if you love nature and quiet seaside towns then I cannot recommend Plymouth more!! Wouldn't hesitate to go back!”

Other cities that made the ranking include Blackpool, in second place, and Portsmouth, in third place with £69 and £73 weekend trips, respectively.
