Meghan Markle and Prince Harry moved to America five years ago, leaving behind both their royal life and the UK. Having been a prince since the day he was born, the move to California would have been an adjustment for Harry, 40, especially when it comes to leaving behind royal traditions he has grown up with, such as Christmases at Sandringham and royal events.
However, while life in Montecito may be different for the family, it seems that Harry and Meghan, 43, have settled in well. On their sprawling Montecito estate, it also seems like the couple have set up family traditions of their own with their children Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3. These have been spoken about fondly by the duchess over the last few months, including last week.
On Mother’s Day in the UK, Meghan shared a photograph of what appeared to be a homemade citrus pie with vibrant slices of orange and topped with a delicate edible flower.
The pie was on a plate that appeared to have been held by Prince Harry and one of the couple’s children. She captioned the photo: "Our family tradition. Mothering Sunday in the UK."
This is not the only tradition the family have. In an interview with People magazine this year, Meghan revealed the family also enjoy duvet days on Saturdays watching cartoons.
Talking about her favourite things, the duchess said: “Saturday morning cartoons in bed is also high on my list. In the UK, they call it a 'duvet day,' and I’ve always found that sweet. Our little family, snuggled up for an easy family morning followed by pancakes and bacon. The dream."
With their busy schedules, Meghan also has some traditions she has with her children, specifically for when she is working away. When she is not at home, the duchess said she packs some children’s books so she can do bedtime stories with Archie and Lillibet despite not being physically together.
While a lot of these traditions are those that Harry and Meghan have set up themselves, they do still follow some of the same traditions the Royal Family have in place.
This includes opening presents on Christmas Eve. Harry wrote in his memoir Spare: "It was Christmas Eve. We FaceTimed with several friends, including a few in Britain. We watched Archie running around the tree. And we opened presents. Keeping to the Windsor family tradition."
The family have lived at their Montecito mansion since 2020 and show no signs of wanting to move anytime soon.
