Supermarket shoppers have been warned over Easter eggs which may contain pieces of metal. Tony’s Chocolonely is recalling some batches of two large hollow Easter eggs due to the potential presence of metal fragments.

The recall affects specific batch codes of the Hollow Milk Caramel Sea Salt Egg and Hollow Milk Chocolate Egg, in a pack size of 242g. A statement from Tony’s Chocolonely said: "If you have purchased the above products with the affected lot codes, please do not consume and instead return the product to the store of purchase for a refund." The company added: "The rest of the Easter range, including all its small eggs and other products, are safe to consume."

"The source of this issue has been identified and resolved. Tony’s Chocolonely is working in partnership with retailers and food authorities who are in the process of removing impacted products from sale and distribution."

Shoppers are advised to check the lot codes of the affected products, which can be found on the side of the packaging under the best-before date. Affected batches have a best-before date of June 2025.

The recall comes just a day after Tony’s Chocolonely issued another warning regarding two of its chocolate bars — the 180g Dark Almond Sea Salt bar and the 180g Everything Bar — due to concerns that they may contain small stones. The affected bars have best-before dates in 2025 and 2026.

Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, and Morrisons are among the supermarkets that stock Tony’s Chocolonely products. In response to the recall, Asda issued a statement saying: "Tony’s Chocolonely is recalling certain batches of its Milk Chocolate Large Hollow Easter Egg and its Caramel Sea Salt Large Hollow Easter Egg products from stores due to a potential presence of metal fragments.

"If you have purchased any of these products, please bring them back to your nearest store for a full refund. No receipt is needed. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. For more information, please contact Asda Customer Relations at 0800 952 0101.”

A Food Standards Agency (FSA) statement said: "Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.

"These notices explain to customers why these products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products."

Shoppers who may have purchased any of the affected batches are being urged to return the products to the store for a refund or replacement. Customers can also visit the Tony’s Chocolonely website for further information.

In addition to Tony’s Chocolonely, Sainsbury's has also issued a recall of its Taste the Difference Belgian Milk Chocolate Honeycomb Pretzel over concerns it too may contain metal fragments.
