Spain remains Brits' favourite holiday destination, with 17 million UK holidaymakers travelling to the country in 2023. The capital, Madrid, as well as Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia, are among the most in-demand cities for holidaymakers.

But, with Spanish cities lamenting the crowds of tourists in the peak months of summer, many holidaymakers will be keeping an eye on potential alternative destinations this summer. One city that has caught the eye, thanks to its affordability and beauty, is Cordoba, located in the southern region of Andalusia. Those who visit in April can expect gorgeous weather, with average highs of 31C, according to nomadseason.com.

Not only that, but a study by Magnet Kitchens using data from Numbeo to analyse 190 cities worldwide found that Cordoba was the most affordable city for a bottle of wine.

Topping the list alongside the Italian capital, Rome, a bottle of wine in Cordoba is available for as little as £2.80.

The city's allure and history have secured its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Its rich history dates back to the arrival of the Romans in 152 BC.

Cordoba was also known as the capital of the Moorish Empire during the 'Islamic Golden Age'. It was hailed as a centre for art, science, and philosophy.

Skyscanner has also named the city among its best destinations to visit in 2025.

Among the must-see sites is the Mezquita Cathedral, one of the "world’s greatest works of Islamic architecture".

Meanwhile, the city's Roman history is captured via the Roman Bridge of Cordoba - built during the 1st century BC.

Getting to Cordoba isn't too complicated either. You can fly from the UK to Seville's international airport before making your way to Cordoba by car (taking 90 minutes) or by train (45 minutes).

One TripAdvisor user said: "Cordoba is such a lovely city, and well worth being given extra time."

Another added: "I love Cordoba and have spent a week there before - doing so again in late September. It can be extremely hot in summer, so the suggestion above of combining it with Cadiz would be a nice contrast.

"Cadiz has lovely beaches, lots of great bars and restaurants and some good day trip options."

A third added: "I feel the Mosque-Cathedral is unique in the world and should not be missed."
