This pretty part of Europe is one that’s not often visited by Brits but it’s a perfect quiet destination to head to this summer. Carinthia is Austria’s southernmost and least densely populated state - and it’s a paradise of gentle mountain peaks, pristine lakes, and alpine villages.

Home to over 1200 lakes, 200 of which are swimmable, it is an idyllic summer retreat. The best way to reach the area is to fly to Klagenfurt Airport.

One visitor on Tripadvisor who visited Lake Worthersee said: “A very cool experience, we loved it very much, we took a whole day walking around the lake - highly recommended and very relaxing.

“We arrived at the Kangenfurt stop, on the last boat, and had dinner at the pizzeria at the stop - it was great and has super good, huge, quality-price pizzas.”

Surrounded by the Alps, the area offers excellent opportunities for hiking throughout the year if you’re hoping to have a more adventurous holiday.

The region is also home to the stunning Hohe Tauern National Park, a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts to visit as part of your trip.

One other must-see place is Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which is one of Austria’s top three destinations.
