American expats living in the UK have shared what they find the biggest differences between the two nations are. The area of the home they say is a culture shock are UK bathrooms. One of the biggest differences is that there are no plug sockets in bathrooms in the UK.

In the US, many use heated hair appliances in the bathroom to style their hair with the mirror in there. However, this isn’t something people do in the UK. Taylor Kane, known as Prague.Princess on TikTok, said: “One of the most inconvenient things is that there are no outlets in the bathrooms here.

“So if you want to blow dry your hair you have to do it in the bedroom or another room, which I find really annoying because then your hair gets all over your carpet rather than just getting on the bathroom floor that you can easily sweep up.”

Another shock some Americans have had is that there are not two taps for hot and cold as mixer taps are not common in the USA.

Taylor said: “I have not yet figured out an effective way to wash my face because my options are scolding hot or freezing cold.”

Also in the bathroom, others were shocked about the low water line in the toilet.

In her TikTok, Taylor said: “A trick I learned from another girl here was to put just toilet paper in the bowl to make it a little quieter when you're going to the bathroom.”

The expat also was shocked to see the light switch outside the bathroom and she joked that if she had lived in the UK while growing up, her siblings would have switched it off while she was in there.

One final aspect of British loos that the American found confusing is calling it a toilet.

Another TikTok user, Jackie Todd also posted, she said: “The biggest shock for me was that so many people here call the bathroom just the toilet.

“They're like, "where's the toilet", "I have to go to the toilet", which is just so TMI. I don't want to know what you're doing in there.”

While these might be overlooked on the day to day by Brits people, it’s clear that these elements of the British bathroom aren’t popular with Americans.
