Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone Lager is recalling two popular products over a “possible health risk”. Batches of Hawkstone Black and Hawkstone Spa Lager were found to contain wheat which is not declared on the label.
This means they could trigger reactions in people who are allergic or intolerant to wheat or gluten, including those with coeliac disease. The affected products are made by The Cotswold Brewing Company Limited, which urged customers to return them.
A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “If you have bought any of the above products and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease, do not consume them.
“Instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”
The recall applies to all batches of Hawkstone Black sold in 440ml cans, and all batches of Hawkstone Spa Lager in 330ml cans.
Jeremy Clarkson launched his Hawkstone beer and cider brand in 2021, offering a range of premium British beers and ciders.
The products started as a local collaboration using barley grown at his Diddy Squat Farm in Oxfordshire before exploding in popularity.
Describing it as a “fun business”, Mr Clarkson said: “When you go out with people in brewing, they actually have a pint — and then usually another. I enjoy that a lot more than water at lunch.”
The Top Gear star previously joked that he wanted to name the beer “Lager McLagerface” but this was vetoed by advertising gurus as not promoting a premium image.
Around one in 100 people suffer from coeliac disease, according to Coeliac UK. The autoimmune condition is caused by a gluten intolerance and can cause symptoms including digestive issues and fatigue.
