Queen Camilla is celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary to King Charles today, and while she is the current Queen Consort of the Commonwealth, and has held other titles in the past, there was one particular title that she refused to have.Camilla's title when Charles would ascend to the throne was the subject of debate for many years prior to the monarch's Coronation in 2023.
However, the late Queen Elizabeth made her stance clear when she expressed her "sincere wish" that Camilla be styled as "Queen Consort" when her son ascends to the throne with King Charles further cementing it when on the Coronation invitations, Buckingham Palace invited recipients to the "Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III & Queen Camilla".
However, there were other titles Camilla held during her lifetime.
Upon her marriage to Charles in 2005, Camilla was styled Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, while in Scotland, she was known known as the Duchess of Rothesay.
The Dukedom of Rothesay is a title given to the heir to the British throne - similar to the Prince of Wales.
King Charles was the longest-serving Prince of Wales, having held the title for 64 years and 44 days, from 1958 to 2022.
But despite her husband being Prince of Wales, Camilla chose not to take the Princess of Wales title, which was at the time last held by Charles's former wife, the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
The decision was thought to have been taken as a result of the aftermath of the public's very low perception of her, following Diana's tragic death in 1997.
Reflecting on the past struggles she had to endure regarding the public's low perception of her, the Queen said in 2018 that she wouldn’t "wish the public scrutiny that she has faced on her worst enemy".
She told the Mail on Sunday’s You Magazine: "I couldn’t really go anywhere… it was horrid. It was a deeply unpleasant time and I wouldn’t want to put my worst enemy through it."
Princess Kate, the wife of Charles's eldest child, Prince William, did end up taking the Princess of Wales title, which she currently holds.
