A father and his police officer son have been killed on a golf course after a tree fell and crushed their golf cart during a storm.
The tragic incident happend on April 6 when Matthew Terrell Collins Sr, 58, and Matthew Terrell Collins Jr, 29, were enjoying a round of golf at the Bull Creek Golf Course in Midland, Georgia. When the weather took a turn for the worse the pair took shelter under a tree - a decision that would cost them their lives.
The storm has caused widespread damage throughout the region with at least 20 deaths reported since April 2 as a result of flooding and tornadoes across the South and the Midwest, according to local officials.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the cost of funeral and memorial expenses for Matthew Sr. and Jr. A tribute on the page read: "On April 6, 2025, our community suffered a heartbreaking and unimaginable loss. Matthew Terrell Collins Jr., age 29, and his father, Matthew Terrell Collins Sr., age 58, were both tragically killed when a tree fell on them during a severe weather incident. They were spending time together when the storm struck—sharing a moment between father and son that would unknowingly become their last.
"Matthew Jr. was a loyal friend, a kindhearted soul, and someone who always showed up for the people in his life. He shared a deep bond with his father, and losing both of them so suddenly is a devastating blow to everyone who knew and loved them. Now, we’re coming together to support the person who meant the world to them—Matthew Jr.'s and Sr.'s wife and mother, who is now facing the unimaginable: laying to rest both her husband and her son."
So far $25,266 has been donated from 396 people. Shocked but grateful for the support, Tabetha Collins commented on the fundraiser: "Thank you from the depths of our hearts for everyone’s outpouring of love toward our brother and father’s funeral costs. Your kindness has been a true blessing during one of the hardest times of our lives.
"We thank God for putting such loving and supportive people like you in our lives. Your generosity lifted a burden we couldn’t have carried alone, and we are forever grateful. May God continue to cover us all in this time of grief. Thank you all so much."
A post on Facebook by the Columbus Georgia Police Department read: "We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Matthew Collins, Jr., a former Columbus Police officer, and his father, Matthew Collins, Sr. Both lost their lives yesterday while spending time together at Bull Creek Golf Course.
"Matthew Jr. served our department with pride, and we are grateful for his service to this community. We extend our deepest condolences to the Collins family and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp spoke out after he learned about the deaths of the two men. Kemp posed on X: “Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by the tragic deaths of two Georgians in Muscogee County today as a result of the severe weather. We ask that you join us in keeping their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers, along with all those responding to storm damage.”
