When people used to think of Margate, they'd think of a tired seaside town littered with derelict buildings. But today, the place is the gem of the Kent coast. In fact, Margate is so popular and highly regarded that it's been ranked as the country's top seaside town to move to.
Experts at My Baggage conducted research on house prices, salaries, climate conditions, connectivity and amenities to decide which UK coastal towns are the best for Brits to relocate to. After the study was complete, Margate was crowned the champion. But why? Well, the researchers found that the area’s sunlight hours (1,846 a year), moderate rainfall (612.64mm), and superior broadband speeds (210.1 Mbps) made Margate the number one destination for those looking for a home by the sea.
House prices in the area are above the national average, though at £333,000 - the average is £269,000. However, for the south-east of England, Margate is cheap. Average house prices fetch £441k in and around London.
Speaking of London, Margate is well-located for those that want to be able to work a day or two a week in the capital. Trains from the Kentish town take a little over two hours into the centre of the city.
If it's restaurants you're after, Margate's got you covered. Whether it's Caribbean cuisine, fresh fish or a cosy Sunday roast you're in the market for, Margate has it. The town even has high-end tasting menu spots for those who can afford it.
