A travel blogger who visited Britain’s “worst seaside city” got a pleasant surprise when he checked out its Wetherspoons. YouTuber Ed Chapman decided to explore Bangor, which was voted one of the nation’s worst places to visit in a recent survey.
In a survey by consumer magazine Which? involving 4,700 participants, Bangor came rock bottom of 100 seaside spots in the UK, with those asked complaining it is "drab and run down".
But Ed had an altogether different experience, revealing it all in a recent video. He found little to complain about, finding the Welsh city quiet, but a pretty agreeable place to spend a couple of days.
While he was there, Ed decided to satisfy his craving for a classic fish and chips. A few weeks ago he found himself "almost speechless" at how disappointing his meal was at Tom Kerridge's fish and chips in London – even setting aside the dizzying £37 price tag for the celebrity chef's offering.
So he took himself to The Black Bull Inn, once a Roman Catholic church and now Bangor’s Wetherspoons. Even though, as one commenter suggested: “Going to a seaside town, craving decent fish and chips and then going to a Wetherspoons is borderline psychopath stuff.”
Ed had a couple of quibbles with his Wetherspoons meal, notably the speed of service: “It took 20 minutes to get a bottle of water and then five minutes later the fish and chips turned up.”
But, he added, once his meal did arrive it was a distinct step up from the Tom Kerridge offering, which he rated as “quite possibly the worst fish and chips” he’d ever eaten..
“The fish and chips looked better than the one I had at Harrods,” he said. “The batter was much better by far, although the fish still wasn’t great.”
What was an improvement, Ed says, was the price. A reasonable-quality chippy tea set Ed back just £7.50 – almost £30 cheaper than the Tom Kerridge offering.
“£7.50 for fish and chips and a bottle of water it's ludicrous,” he said. “I nearly complained, it was it was so cheap!”
Ed concluded by saying Bangor is well worth a visit. Not so much for its fish and chips, so much as for the most important reason of all – the people.
”I will say the locals have all been, including the taxi driver, really friendly,” he said. “Very friendly people is a good start to any place you go to, regardless of if it's a dump or not."
