Elon Musk was forced to quit a live stream of his favourite video game after he kept losing and was taunted by trolls about his relationship with US President Donald Trump and his personal life. The world's richest man live-streamed himself playing Path of Exile 2 from his private jet to demonstrate the fast in-flight wifi of his satellite provider, Starlink, over the weekend. However, Musk, who has claimed to be one of the game's top players in the world, repeatedly failed to keep his on-screen character alive during the 90-minute session and eventually signed off in a cloud of rage after being targeted by cyberbullies.
Comments on the livestream, which was open for anyone to watch and contribute to, heckled the multi-billionaire about his underwhelming gameplaying skills. One user wrote: "You will always feel insecure, and it will never go away", while another added: "You have no real friends and will die alone".
One viewer claimed to be the conservative influencer Ashely St. Claire, who made headlines earlier this year when she claimed to be the mother of Musk’s 13th child.
"Elon, it's me, Ashley St. Claire. I have no other means of contacting you," they wrote. "Please pay your child support."
Musk was playing an early access version of the role-playing fantasy game, which allows users to gain new skills by defeating enemies and completing quests.
Rather than giving viewers a running commentary of his game experience, however, the 53-year-old was largely silent and impassive as the tirade of trolling comments appeared one after another on the screen alongside his head.
Musk, who became part of President Trump's inner circle after returning to the White Office this year, was also accused of "ruining the country just like you ruined all your marriages".
Another gamer said the Tesla owner's estranged transgender daughter Vivian had been right to accuse her father of being terrible at video games.
Some viewers praised Musk's work to trim down US federal spending through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and Starlink's mission to provide worldwide internet access, however, and urged the tech giant to mute the chat to stop the tide of abusive messages.
But the slew of negativity continued until it eventually spurred the businessman to retort that "there are a lot of r*****s in this chat”, before abruptly ending the stream, claiming that the connection had been lost despite still appearing on-screen.
He later deleted the livestream from X, but not before it had been downloaded and swiftly posted on YouTube.
In real life, Musk has recently been embroiled in a war of words with Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro, who he accused of being "dumber than a sack of bricks" after the pair disagreed on the imposition of US tariffs on partners, including the EU. Musk later apologised for the comment, saying it was "so unfair to bricks".
