Europe is no stranger to walkable urban gems that are easy to explore on foot. In fact, most major cities have layouts that easily connect landmarks. But one city in particular has stepped into the spotlight for its pedestrian-friendly appeal, earning a top spot among the continent’s most walkable destinations. As walking holidays continue to rise in popularity - offering travel lovers the chance to enjoy fitness along with their cultural activities - cities that balance accessibility, beauty, and rich storytelling through their streetscapes are being highlighted.
Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, praised Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, as a top choice for a walking holiday. She said: “Krakow is relatively compact and easy to navigate on foot, with pedestrian-only zones in place in the city’s Old Town.
“Furthermore, there’s plenty of history and medieval architecture to discover, making it a great place to explore while boosting fitness.”
Krakow’s Old Town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is the heart of the city’s charm, with a well-preserved medieval layout and framed by Planty Park, which acts as a green belt around the town.
At its centre is the Rynek Główny, Europe’s largest medieval town square, where visitors can see the majestic St. Mary’s Basilica and listen for the hourly trumpet call from its tallest tower.
Just a short walk away is Wawel Castle, established on the orders of King Casimir III the Great on a limestone hill overlooking the Vistula River.
This former royal residence offers insight into Poland’s royal past through the Wawel Royal Castle National Art Collection and is a must-see for history lovers.
Another historic highlight is the Collegium Maius, the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University, where astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus once studied.
Travellers can also walk the path to the former Jewish district of Kazimierz, where synagogues, museums, and memorials honour centuries of Jewish heritage.
Spring brings mild temperatures and stunning blooms across the city, creating the perfect conditions for spending time outdoors.
Lynn emphasised the variety Europe offers for walking holidays, stating: “Overall, it’s safe to say Europe is packed full of some incredible locations, offering the perfect environment for an all-encompassing walking holiday.
“From Dubrovnik to Krakow, there’s bound to be something for everyone’s tastes.”
