Great British Bake Off star Dame Mary Berry has shared how she will often leave her home in order to avoid rowing with her husband. Dame Mary, who celebrates her 90th birthday today, recently shared that while 'love and respect' are important, she added that there was another vital reason behind her nearly 60-year marriage with Paul Hunnings:"Also we never raise our voices at each other because, you know, we love each other."
And, when she does find herself somewhat frustrated, she adopts a rather simple tactic to avoid emotions escalating:"If I’m a bit miffed, I very often think, ‘Well, I’m not gonna say that right now.’ I’ll go to the greenhouse and do some cuttings."
Deciding to take a short stroll down to her greenhouse and indulge in one of her beloved past times, she continuend her chat with Vogue magazine by insisting: "Never go to sleep on a quarrel."
Having walked down the aisle with Paul back in 1966, the couple would go on to have three children together, William, who tragically passed away in 1989, Annabel and Thomas.
Away from handing out marriage tips, Dame Mary has seen huge success in broadcasting in what has been a glittering career to date. Already established as a hugely gifted name in the culinary world, Dame Mary began her career in television back in the 1970s when she appeared in Afternoon Plus with Judith Chalmers. Her career in broadcasting soon began to go from strength to strength, featuring in the likes of Mary Berry Cooks and Mary Berry's Absolute Favourites.
However, Dame Mary is possibly most well-loved for appearing alongside Paul Hollywood to co-judge contestants baking skills on the ever popular Great British Bake Off between 2010 until she finally called time on her stay in 2016, when she was replaced by Dame Prue Leith who remains on the show to this day.
Meanwhile, in her latest TV appearance, Dame Mary will join presenters, Alex Jones and Roman Kemp in a special episode of The One Show in celebration of her ninth decade this evening at 7 pm.
