Passengers at a London train station were left stunned when they spotted Gemma Collins showcasing her musical talent on the piano. The reality TV star impressed onlookers with her unexpectedly skilful rendition of the classic piece "Chopsticks" at Liverpool Street station. Collins joined a growing list of famous faces who had also taken a seat at the public piano.
She was following in the footsteps of Eurovision star Sam Ryder and Brad Keller, last year’s winner of The Piano who had also had a go. The diverse lineup of celebrities and accomplished musicians will continue to perform non-stop at the station from 6 a.m. today until tomorrow morning.
The bold event marks the lead-up to Channel 4's new series of The Piano, premiering this Sunday at 9 p.m and follows the broadcaster's research which revealed that the piano is the instrument most people wish they could play, with 40% of respondents selecting it.
Gemma Collins expressed her delight at participating, stating: "I loved having the chance to be part of the Pianothon with Channel 4 and doing something a bit different."
She further added: "It was a chance see the GC in a new light," and joked, "I was a bit disappointed I couldn't ship my leopard-print piano into Liverpool Street Station, though.
"Music is about connecting with people and sharing moments of joy, and what is more joyful than surprising people in a train station with loads of brilliant music? Maybe this is the start of something exciting for me watch this space."
A study of 2,000 adults revealed that the piano is the most commonly played instrument among musically inclined adults (46%), followed by the guitar (32%) and drums (20%). For those who don't play an instrument or don't do so regularly, 33% cited a lack of time as the reason, while 27% felt lessons were too costly.
The OnePoll.com data also showed that a significant 88% are impressed when they witness someone skilfully playing the piano. Furthermore, 67% expressed a desire for more free live music events, as 46% of concert-goers reported feeling 'uplifted' when attending such events.
Amber Kirby, from Channel 4, which will is live streaming the event, commented: "A 24-hour piano concert at Liverpool Street Station is the perfect way to celebrate the launch of The Piano’s third series this Sunday."
She added: “It is a unique opportunity to showcase brilliant performers playing their hearts out, as well as sharing joy and the incredible power and diversity of the piano.
