If you’re having trouble with pigeons nesting around your home there could be a simple and cost-effective solution already waiting in your kitchen cupboard. There are several ways of humanely getting rid of a pigeon problem - but this trick is likely the most cost-effective option of all.

Pigeons are said to be averse to strong-smells such as pepper or cinnamon which could be used to get rid of the birds. According to Safeguard Pest Control, a spicy pepper powder mixed with vinegar or even water and spraying it “liberally” across an area can be enough to deter the pigeons. However, the company warns this will need to be repeated fairly regularly to be effective.

The birds are also said to “hate” the smell of mothballs and placing these around a roof space can be another effective method.

Safeguard Pest Control reveals another way to deal with a pigeon problem is psychological.

It explains placing an item such as an old tennis ball on sticks or on the end of fence posts can be effective because pigeons believe round spherical shapes are eyes, therefore confusing them with the eyes of predators.

The experts also recommend other options, such as humane pigeon settings. They say this method can be ideal for balconies, hard to reach areas and high-level roof spaces, describing it as "non-invasive", “versatile” and capable of producing fast results.

Another solution are humane spike strips, which despite their pointy appearance, are totally harmless according to the experts. 

Safeguard Pest Control claims the method is most likely the best humane way of sorting your pigeon problem. They say the spikes - which can be put anywhere and are long-lasting and cost-effective - work by not allowing the birds enough room to build a nest.

They explain the spikes do not poke or harm the birds in any way and simply act as a deterrent to stop nest-building. 

Other humane methods include bird gels which provide an ultraviolet surface which can trigger their flight response and ultrasonic devices.

Meanwhile, other experts have also suggested adding certain fragrant flora to your garden that pigeons find repulsive to keep them away.

Plants such as peppermint, marigold, and lavender are not only humane deterrents but also add a lovely burst of colour to any garden area.
