Portugal is a destination loved by UK holidaymakers. The country boasts plenty of unspoilt beaches, a great summer climate, incredible cuisine, and to add to that list, it has the cheapest bottles of wine across the whole of Europe. While vineyards are dotted all over the continent, ordering a bottle of wine, whether you're at home or away, can be slightly pricey, but when in Portugal, that'll be the least of your worries as a bottle will only set you back a few pounds.

Drink Merchants ranked countries according to their prices of wine and in Portugal - the cheapest, the average price of a bottle is just £3.91, but you can get bottles for as little as £2.57. The shockingly low prices are incredible, considering that an average bottle of wine in the UK is £9.36 and the price of a bottle in Iceland, the most expensive country, is £15. That's nearly six times more than the cheapest bottle in Portugal.

Portugal boasts around 4,700 wineries, and with its low prices, it makes sense that Portugal is the world's largest consumer of wine per capita, at 45 litres per 1000 people.

Cheap bottles of wine costing under five euros (£4.29) can often be found at the supermarket, including Esteva, Evel, and Porca de Murca. You can even find a Vinho Verde for a few euros, which is perfect for the summer.

According to the Sun, you can pop into a store and pick up a quality bottle of wine for as little as three euros (£2.57). If that isn't enough to get Portugal on your bucket list, then you'll be glad to know that the country offers a whole lot more.

Portugal has a beautiful and diverse coastline stretching 943 kilometres along the mainland, where visitors will find a variety of gorgeous beaches. The average temperature can reach up to 24C in May, so you still have some time to get a sun-filled holiday booked to enjoy soon.

As well as captivating landscapes, Portugal has a great blend of culture which can be explored through the pretty villages and towns right to the monuments and landmarks. There are 17 UNESECO World Heritage Sites in Portugal and its islands.

When a country has so much to offer, it can be difficult to know where to start. According to TripAdvisor, Portugal's Oceanario de Lisboa, a world-renowned public aquarium, is one of the country's top attractions.

The huge aquarium, described as a "window" into the oceans, features over 15,000 marine creatures from 500 species. One visitor, who rated it 5 stars, said: "Fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Lots of different types of fish and sharks, as well as otters and penguins. If I visit Lisbon again, I will be re-visiting with the family and little ones."

And to really draw you to Portugal, the country's Algarve region, home to golden cliffs, relaxing spas, and beautiful trails perfect for walking and cycling, was named the world's cheapest holiday destination.
