So far this year, we have had to say many tough goodbyes to high-profile stars in British soaps. Several notable deaths have occurred over the last few months—from EastEnders icons to former Hollyoaks stars who left us too early. We have rounded up a list of the much-loved figures who are no longer with us and have taken a look back on their soap careers.
Last month, Coronation Street star John St Ryan died at the age of 72 following a heart attack. He played lorry driver Charlie Whelan in the ITV soap from 1993 until 1994, and it was reported that he died surrounded by his family on April 3.
His wife Joyce confirmed in a Facebook post. "I and our family want to let our friends know that John had a heart attack the evening of Thursday 3rd of April. We were with him at the hospital where the staff did everything possible but unfortunately he did not survive. We are absolutely heart broken.
"John wanted to aid medical research and donated his body, so there will not be a funeral. Later, we will arrange a celebration of his wonderful life. We are all fortunate to have known and loved this special 'Gentleman' as he has been described to me numerous times over the last couple of days."
Ex-Hollyoaks actor Paul tragically died at the age of 46 earlier this year in January. The Celebrity Love Island star's management confirmed his passing in a statement: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of @pauldanan at just 46 years old.
"Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many. His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him. "During this difficult time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Paul’s family, friends, and colleagues. No further comments will be made at this time."
It was reported that Paul "slipped and fell" at the 'dry house' where he had been staying to help overcome his addictions. Local police are not treating his death as suspicious.
Kathryn died last month at 64 and was known for appearing in soaps such as EastEnders as Magda Czajkowski, Emmerdale, and Coronation Street as Carol Starkey.
She also ventured into radio presenting and fronted shows such as BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio York, and ITV's Live Talk. From 1994 until his death in 2005, Richard Whiteley was Kathryn's partner.
Robin died last month at the age of 73, with his website confirming his passing. He worked as a musician and embarked on numerous BBC projects, including EastEnders. On his website, a statement read, "Robin White died in March 2025. This site will stay up as a memorial to this remarkable man."
A biography also stated that Robin was featured in a "pivotal episode of the British TV soap opera EastEnders in December 2002."
Hollyoaks fans were heartbroken when fan favourite Diane Langton died in January at the age of 77. She played Marlena "Nana" McQueen and also starred in EastEnders as Cindy Beale's mother, Bev Williams.
Her agent said, "I am sad to say that Diane Langton passed away this morning. Diane had a rich and remarkable career, appearing on stage, in films, and on television, including playing the iconic Nana McQueen in Hollyoaks from 2007 to the present day."
The official Hollyoaks X account stated the cast and crew were "all absolutely heartbroken by the news". It said, "Di has been an adored friend and cast member in Hollyoaks for the last 18 years."
