A group of automotive experts have reviewed almost every single electric car on the market and revealed which model they think is the best. In fact, one car was so good they made it their car of the year for 2025, beating petrol, diesel and hydrogen rivals.

The group of experts came from renowned car reviewers What Car? who have spent the past few decades assessing every car on the market to help people make the right choice for them.

In a video about which were the best electric cars on the market in the UK today, they ran through the various options from the major manufacturers and eventually settled on a car from French OEM Renault.

Renault recently released their new Renault 5, a rebirth for a car that originally came out in the middle of the 20th Century. Now revamped for the electric age, their new model has taken the streets by storm, with glowing review after glowing review.

This reputation has been enhanced by What Car?’s assessment that it is not only the best electric car on sale, but the best car on sale in the UK.

Discussing the 5’s attributes they said: “Few have managed to deliver on the hype and the heritage in the way this new electric hatchback has. And while lots of people might love the styling of the new Renault 5, the great thing is that this car’s talents go far beyond the way it looks.

“It’s a small electric car that offers a very useable real world range (253 miles), its supple ride and tidy handling make it a delight to drive and the well finished technologically impressive interior would never have you think that this is one of the cheapest new electric cars that you can buy.”

They admitted the likes of a Tesla Model 3 could travel further on a full charger, as well as being faster and bigger but is far more expensive as well.

They continued: “But, the Renault 5 offers an incredible blend of EV talents for an unbelievably compelling price which far undercuts the model 3. And being able to do all of that at this entry-level price point certainly makes the Renault 5 worth shouting about. In fact, we’ve named it the What Car? Car of the year for 2025.”

However, the Renault 5 wasn’t the only electric to impress with the likes of the aforementioned Tesla Model 3, Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq, and VW ID Buzz making up the rest of the top five and deeply impressing the judges.

The spike in popularity for the Renault 5 comes at an important time for the UK’s automotive industry as the drive intensifies to get more and more people to switch from petrol or diesel to electric motoring.

Recent figures have seen a spike in people buying EVs, one which has been welcomed by experts and manufacturers alike. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) over 63,000 electric cars were sold in the UK last month.

Following the announcement, managing director of sales at Close Brothers Motor Finance John Cassidy, told the Express why there was such a big spike. He explained: A combination of new registration plates, discounting activity and buyers rushing to beat the vehicle excise duty (VED) changes ahead of April contributed to a spike in new registrations.

“However, the numbers still fall short of the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate targets. This will spark further concerns over widespread electric vehicle (EV) adoption, as data still remains heavily skewed by fleet sales.

“The Government’s decision to apply VED to EVs only adds to cost concerns which are piling up for motorists, and adds further doubt over the proposed 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles - with 78 percent of motor dealers already lacking confidence that this will go ahead.”
