Cheese is beloved by people across the world thanks to its delicious taste, versatility and its ability to make nearly every dish delicious. However, the staple item to many households is on the verge of becoming 20% to 25% more expensive from next week,it has been reported.

UK cheese is likely to become more pricey in US stores due to President Donald Trump’s 10% tariffs on all British imports from Britain, leading exporter of British cheese Somerdale International has warned. While US consumers will be affected by the likely rising cost, the tariffs could have an impact on UK producers too. Home to the iconic cheddar and an array of lesser known brands, Britain is one of the best cheesemaking nations in the world. UK cheese has most certainly caught the eye of international consumers with them often being found in supermarkets in the US.

Last year the UK shipped a whopping "250 containers-worth of cheese to the US in 2024", marking a 4.1% increse in popularity compared to 2023.

Somerdale director Alan Jenkins, who looks after the company’s US operation, told The Grocer he is concerned the massive retail hikes will cause demand to drop off, which could affect the UK’s economy.

Mr Jenkins says: “Prices will rise, we’re passing that forward as best we can and not pushing back to our suppliers.

“It takes a long time to create demand, and that can also go really quickly. But we’re in consistent growth – shipping 250 containers-worth of cheese to the US in 2024 – and we’re confident we can ride out this storm.”

Supermarkets across the US sell a range of imported items including fresh and packaged foods as well as household essentials. Trump's sweeping tariffs mean businesses shipping goods from overseas will pay for those tariffs, and they will pass some of the higher costs down to cash-strapped consumers.

US shoppers can also expect to see prices rise on seafood, coffee, fruit, nuts and chocolate bars.
