Boasting an excellent quality of life and an abundance of fascinating wildlife Namibia is fast gaining a reputation as a place to truly escape life’s hustle and bustle. Namibia, on the west coast of Africa, offers warm temperatures all year round.
Considered among the safest nations in Africa, Namibia is vast and sparsely populated, it spans an impressive 318,260 square miles - 36 times the size of Wales. With a population of 3.1 million people, Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Its sparse population is mainly due to its arid and semi-arid environment and large sections of the country are dominated by deserts.
The population is not uniformly dispersed, the majority of the population resides in the northern half of the country, particularly near the Angolan border where rainfall is heavier. The southern and coastal regions are virtually uninhabited.
The country is also full of otherworldly desert landscapes and wildlife that has adapted to some of the harshest conditions on the planet.
Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, is a small yet friendly, cosmopolitan city with enough of a buzz to make it exciting but there are no hordes of visitors so you are safe from rubbing elbows with people along its streets which are lined with cafés.
One of Namibia's most spectacular landmarks is Sossusvlei, a stunning dry lake, which is famous for its towering red sand dunes is one of the world’s best destinations to visit in April.
The dunes at Sossusvlei are among the highest in the world, with many of them reaching over 200 metres. The tallest of these dunes, nicknamed Big Daddy, standing at about 325 metres high.
Another well-known dune is Dune 45, which is popular for sunrise and sunset hikes due to its accessible location.
Sossusvlei is part of the Namib Desert, which is considered the world's oldest desert, dating back at least 55 million years.
April marks the end of the rainy season and it is a lovely time to visit Namibia. Visitors can expect more moderate temperatures of around 25C and less humidity than the previous months.
And it seems Namibia charms those who visit, one user took to Reddit to describe the African country as "otherworldly".
The user said: "Every single picture from there looks otherworldly. Literally like another planet."
Another user added: "I was really lucky to get to live in Namibia for two years. It’s a really pretty country."
