The UK high street is set to lose more shops, supermarkets and banks this year. Businesses continue to be hit with increased energy costs and rent, while the recent rise in employer National Insurance contributions has dealt a further blow to many retailers.

Shops from Sainsbury's, Iceland and Homesense have already closed this year. Other businesses have been forced to review their stores and expansion plans due to cost increases. WHSmith, Aldi, Morrisons and Santander are among those that will close more sites in 2025. Here is the full list of sites that are set to shut. 

WHSmith

A number of WHSmith stores have already closed this year, including sites in Bolton, Basingstoke and Luton. Recently, the retailer closed stores in Halstead and Woolwich, with further shops set to shut between now and July.

Aldi

Aldi recently confirmed the imminent closure of a store in Wales. The supermarket in Llanelli will shut on April 27, dealing a blow to local people.

They will now have to visit the next nearest Aldi which is around 30 minutes away. One shopper said: "There is a lot of elderly people who rely on this store it needs to stay." Another said: "There be nothing worth going to town for soon."

A third said: "So many people walk to this Aldi. It's a great place with fabulous staff! What about the people who don't drive? This is a huge blow for so many!"

A fourth said: "I'll be gutted much prefer this store to the new one. It will be missed." Another said: "Trostre shelves are always empty - town centre is my go to!"

Morrisons

A number of Morrisons Daily convenience stores will close on Wednesday, April 16. Meanwhile, 52 Morrisons cafés will also close as part of an ongoing "renewal programme" from the supermarket.

Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh said: "The changes we are announcing today are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth.

"In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option."

Santander

Santander will close 95 branches as part of a major shake-up. The closures will result in around 750 jobs being made redundant.

The bank has 444 branches but this will be reduced to 290 full-service branches and five work cafés - which are free co-working spaces - once the closures and changes to other branches have been implemented.

It will also remove the front desk in 18 of its remaining branches, while a further 36 will have their hours reduced. The reduced hours at these branches mean these particular banks will open either Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30am to 3:00pm, or Tuesday and Thursdays, 9:30am to 3pm, and Saturdays 9:30am to 12:30pm.

A spokesperson for Santander UK, said: "As customer behaviour changes, we are ensuring that our branches remain fit for the future. Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside Work Cafés, counter-free branches and reduced hours branches, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face money management and guidance.

"As a business, we must move with customers and balance our investment across all the places where we interact with customers, to deliver the very best for them now and in the future. Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.

"However, we believe that the introduction of our new Community Bankers and the exciting plans we have for our remaining network of 349 branches and Work Cafés, alongside the rapid and innovative improvements to our award-winning mobile banking app, will provide the right balance of digital banking and human interaction when required."
