A novice gardener has shared the “brilliant” method she used to achieve a “stylish” garden that looks as though it’s been created by a “pro”.
With the arrival of warmer weather and National Gardening Day (April 14) many people are keen to make the most of it by upping their time outdoors. For those lucky enough to have a garden, making it a comfortable and appealing space is a desirable goal.
But not everyone is blessed with green fingers. For those keen to achieve an enviable oasis at home, self-described “newbie” Hannah Swift shared her solution.
Taking to TikTok, she showcased her flowerbeds in a popular video that’s racked up more than one million views.
In a voiceover, Hannah explained: “If you’re a beginner gardener like me and you have absolutely no idea what plants to buy in order to get a flower bed like this [image of lush flowerbed appears on screen], then keep watching because I’m going to show you how to.
“After a failed attempt at trying to fill a flowerbed with plants that complemented each other, I came across a brilliant company called Garden on a Roll.”
Hannah continued: “It’s actually a really clever concept for beginner gardeners like me, where you essentially choose what you want your border to look like, select the correct flowerbed dimensions, and then everything arrives in a box along with a biodegradable template ready for you to plant.”
Hannah then unboxed her order to show every item she received - as well as how to use them. She continued: “Once my box arrived, I cleared my flower bed, lay down some fresh compost, raked it through and then I was ready to start.
“As well as your selected plants and template, you are also provided with organic feed, gardening gloves and a hand trowel which was so much better than mine, so I was super thankful.”
The template is adorned with circles to clearly demonstrate where each chosen plant should go. Hannah said: “To get started, I simply rolled out the template on top of my flowerbed and, as you can see, I had a lot of plants to plant.
“I actually chose the beautiful English cottage garden border which has a lovely balance of wild beauty and classic elegance.”
She said though the plants may appear “small” when she displayed them to the camera, they will grow to larger proportions, and the bed will gradually fill out.
The video continued, showing Hannah planting the various pots on the template roll. In the voiceover, she described the process as "therapeutic".
She joked that being a “newbie” to the gardening scene, she was unable to pronounce around “95%” of her chosen plants, but displayed them on camera in all their glory for viewers to drink in.
Once the plants were all laid out correctly, Hannah had to score a hole on the template, dig a space, then take the plant out of its pot and plant it in the soil.
She said: “It really is quite as simple as that - once you’ve planted your plants, you just need to add a layer of bark, however we did actually add both compost and bark just to improve the soil quality.”
Hannah added: “I am actually so over the moon with this flowerbed and Garden on a Roll. I think it’s a brilliant concept for beginner gardeners who want to achieve a stylish border that looks like it’s been created by a pro - and you know that it’s going to flourish and bloom into something beautiful.”
