New comedy drama Just Act Normal is soon set to land on TV screens, with the BBC finally confirming its release date.

The brand new TV series is the work of award-winning writer Janice Okoh and is based on her play Three Birds. Consisting of six episodes, Just Act Normal will be coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC Three.

The show stars Chenée Taylor, Kaydrah Walker-Wilkie and Akins Subair as siblings Tiana, Tanika and Tionne respectively. The trio are hiding a terrible family secret.

First-look photos also see Romola Garai as Ms. Jenkins, Sam Buchanan as Dr Feelgood, Ivanno Jeremiah as Leo and Talitha Wing as Rome. Hollyoaks favourite Jennifer Metcalfe makes a guest appearance as Candy while Jamelia features as Fake Jackie.

The show is set in Birmingham and filmed across the West Midlands.

The synopsis reads: "When their mum disappears, Tiana, Tionne, and Tanika fight to hide the truth from the outside world in order to stay together as a family. As Tiana struggles to keep their regular lives afloat, Tionne displaces his grief and Tanika tries to convince her teacher to adopt them, chaos erupts when their mum’s hapless drug dealer, Dr Feelgood, moves in."

The BBC describes the series as an "irreverent portrait of black working-class teenage life", adding: "A coming-of-age story of sorts. The first times, the f*ck-ups, and the excruciating desire to be more grown up than you’re ready to be.

"It’s a celebration of black joy, of council estates, and corner shops. Of working-class living and working-class dreams. It is human and tender, with a thumping great heart."

Just Act Normal is created and written by Janice Okoh and directed by Nathaniel Martello-White, who is also co-executive producer. The show will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.

Executive producers are George Ormond, George Faber, Janice Okoh and Danielle Scott-Haughton, with Jade Taylor as the producer.

Just Act Normal airs on Wednesday, 16 April on BBC Three at 9pm.
