With sunshine finally returning to gardens across the UK, those lucky enough to have patios have been urged to look out for signs of mould. Leaving mould to grow could pose a health risk and attract unwanted pests such as slugs, termites and cockroaches, according to experts. 

Doug O’Connor from DeerFencing.com said: “While a little green or black discolouration may seem like a mere eyesore, mould on patios can pose health risks and attract unwanted wildlife to your home.” Mould grows easily in areas that are damp, shaded and moist, meaning patios can provide the perfect breeding ground.

Fluctuating temperatures and rain in spring can create the ideal environment for spores to settle and spread.

Mr O’Connor added: “When morning dew or rainwater pools settle in, the combination of warmth, organic debris, and humidity encourages rapid mould growth.

“Concrete, wood, and stone patios can all fall victim to this issue, particularly if they aren't properly maintained or sealed.”

Disturbed mould spores can become airborne. If breathed in, they can trigger respiratory problems, particularly for people with allergies, asthma, or weakened immune systems.

Symptoms include persistent coughing and wheezing, sneezing, skin irritation and watery eyes.

Mould on patios can also attract pests including termites attracted to the smell of decaying wood and slugs, which feed on the organic material that mould breaks down.

Mr O’Connor said: “Once pests establish themselves on your patio, it’s only a matter of time before they find their way into your home.

“What starts as a mould issue outside can quickly escalate into a full-blown pest infestation inside.”

The expert’s advice to prevent and remove mould include improving drainage, trimming overhanging foliage and having a regular cleaning routine.

Using mould-resistant sealant, pressure washing the patio once each season or considering professional treatment could also help.

Mr O’Connor added: “The key to preventing a major mould issue is recognising the early signs. If you notice persistent dark patches that return quickly after cleaning, or if your patio develops a musty odour, these are warning signals that mould has taken hold. 

“Addressing mould problems early can save you from costly repairs and potential health hazards.

“With spring fast approaching, now is the time to take proactive measures against patio mould. By maintaining a dry, clean outdoor space, you can protect your health, home, and peace of mind.”
