The latest episode of The Handmaid's Tale, titled Promotion, was packed with unexpected developments.

Luke Bankole, portrayed by O-T Fagbenle, saw his case dismissed and he began preparing the next stage of his explosive plan.

Meanwhile, Mayday plotted to overthrow the Gilead commanders, with June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Moira (Samira Wiley) embarking on a reconnaissance mission to Jezebel's a week prior to their planned attack.

Disguised as marthas, June and Moira infiltrated the Gilead brothel where they encountered Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer), reports the Mirror US.

They swiftly disclosed their plans to rescue all the women and assassinate the commanders.

Viewers will have to continue watching to see if Mayday's plans succeed, with Luke eager to fight for his daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordan Blake) and extract her from Gilead, as she is due to attend a special school.

However, many fans are already seeking answers about the storyline, with Margaret Atwood's 2019 sequel novel The Testaments providing some spoilers about what lies ahead.

Does June manage to retrieve Hannah in The Handmaid's Tale?

The answer is both affirmative and negative. In The Testaments, Hannah remains under the rule of Gilead, known as Agnes Jemima.

She is the adopted child of Commander Kyle and his wife Tabitha, suggesting that in The Handmaid's Tale TV series, June fails to rescue Hannah.

Given that The Testaments is set to be adapted for television, it appears that June and Luke's efforts to rescue their child will be in vain.

In the book, Hannah chooses to become an Aunt to avoid being wedded to an older commander who is rumoured to have a habit of killing his wives.

During her training, Hannah discovers the truth about her biological parents, including her mother June, who was once a Handmaid and is now working for the resistance group Mayday.

This implies that June has not been successful in rescuing Hannah before this point, and she has spent her formative years in Gilead, potentially facing danger.

However, the novel concludes with Hannah finally reuniting with her parents, but it's surprisingly Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) who facilitates her escape.

Aunt Lydia is instrumental in orchestrating Hannah's escape to Canada, where she joins her half-sister Nichole.

Instead of June, it's Aunt Lydia who works within the confines of Gilead to dismantle the regime.

With her access to information and power, Aunt Lydia is ideally positioned to challenge the authoritarian government and strike at its core.

The symposium at the end of the book - similar to the one in The Handmaid's Tale - further confirms the downfall of Gilead.
