HBO’s The White Lotus season three wrapped on Sunday (6th April) to tepid applause and mixed reviews, with many viewers complaining the ending was predictable and lacked its usual flair. However, what has been gripping fans' imaginations are the behind-the-scenes relationships, drama, and rumours of feuding between two of its stars – Walton Goggins, 53, and Aimee Lou Wood, 31.
The two actors appeared as on-screen couple Rick Hatchett and his girlfriend, Chelsea, who try and enjoy a stay at the White Lotus resort in Thailand. The pair's chemistry and performances were praised by critics and viewers alike, who loved their slightly odd characters and how their relationship developed.
Following the finale, Walton posted a gushing tribute to his and Aimee’s characters, but fans noticed he failed to tag his co-star while adding almost everyone else from the show. He wrote: “With the heaviest of hearts… To me, ours was a love story. It was only ever a love story, hindered by unresolved childhood trauma. In the depths of our despair, there is always beauty around us.”
The snub is a far cry from Walton’s interview with the Telegraph back in March, where the actor said he knew right away Wood would be “a very special person in my life” and called her, “on some levels, a soulmate.”
Following Goggins' finale post, eagle-eyed netizens also spotted that the two were no longer following each other on social media and that Aimee’s comments and likes had disappeared from his account, leading people to believe he had blocked her.
Rumours of a feud between cast members were only heightened when Jason Issac, 61, who appeared in the season as wealthy patriarch Timothy Ratliff, said in an interview with Vulture that working on the show was “a cross between summer camp and Lord of the Flies but in a gilded cage”. He added there had been “friendships that were made and friendships that were lost”.
The Harry Potter star later addressed his comments on The Happy Hour podcast, explaining: “Like anywhere you go for the summer, there’s friendships, there’s romances, there’s arguments, there’s cliques that form and break and reform and stuff like that. I’m careful. I’m not stupid. I look at the internet.”
Doubling down on his remarks, he added: “First of all, it’s none of your business. I’m just saying it wasn’t a holiday, and partly I started saying that because people think we were on a seven-month holiday, and believe me, it felt like work a lot of the time. It was insanely hot, and there’s all the normal social tensions you get anywhere.”
The rumour mill cranked up even more over the weekend following Saturday Night Live's sketch about Aimee Lou. The actress spoke out after the comedy show mocked her appearance and accent. Fans of the star slammed the writers and producers for commissioning a White Lotus skit that ridiculed her signature and unique teeth.
The bit in question saw actress Sarah Sherman impersonate Aimee while using exaggerated prosthetic teeth. The sketch was based on US President Donald Trump and his top team spending time at the fictional White Lotus Hotel. In response, Aimee said that she was left questioning her own appearance. She told her Instagram followers: "Whilst in honest mode - I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny."
While Aimee and her fans blasted the sketch, her former co-star Walton showered it with praise in now-deleted comments. Tagging actor Jon Hamm, Goggins joked: "Jon, I always knew I wasn’t right for that part," referencing the Mad Men star’s performance. He also jumped into the comments on the official SNL Instagram post as he wrote: “Hahahahahhahaha Amazzzingggg."
Following Goggins’ comments about SNL, Aimee Lou was pictured sobbing in the street and wiping tears from her face. The BAFTA-winning actress, 31, appeared to be overcome with emotion while strolling the streets of central London before meeting her friend and fellow actor, Ralph Davis.
The Sex Education actress was comforted by Ralph, who held her in his arms as she cried on the street. Aimee kept a low profile but looked as gorgeous as ever in a casual outfit. The talented star went makeup-free for her coffee date with her friend and opted to wear a burgundy baseball cap - perhaps in an attempt to be more incognito.
In the pictures, obtained by The Mail, Aimee was pictured crying in the arms of her friend before they decided to sit down outside a cafe for a coffee. However, it wasn’t long before the actress seemed to be back in her usual high spirits as she was seen smiling and laughing while holding a vape.
The Daily Express has contacted Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins for comment.
