Acclaimed actor Cate Blanchett has sent shockwaves through the film industry as she claimed she's contemplating retiring from acting after the release of her latest film 'Black Bag'.

The 55-year-old Oscar-winner reflected on her distinguished career, which includes standout roles in Hollywood blockbusters and independent films.

Despite her success, Cate confessed to harbouring desires beyond the silver screen and admitted to a persistent discomfort with fame.

Speaking to Radio Times, she expressed her intentions: "My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. (There are) a lot of things I want to do with my life.

"I've always felt like I'm on the periphery of things, so I'm always surprised when I belong anywhere.

"I go with curiosity into whatever environment that I'm in, not expecting to be accepted or welcomed. I've spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable."

The star, who first gained major attention for her role in the 1998 film 'Elizabeth' and later shone in blockbusters like 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Aviator', is now set to explore the world of radio, reports The Mirror.

Her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in 'The Aviator' earned her the Best Supporting Actress award, and she later clinched the Best Actress accolade for 'Blue Jasmine'. Over the span of 26 years, the Hollywood icon has amassed six additional Oscar nominations.

Cate Blanchett is set to captivate the nation in her first radio drama role, as BBC Radio 4 prepares to broadcast The Fever, marking a significant triumph for the broadcaster.

Alison Hindell, Radio 4's Commissioning Editor for Drama and Fiction, praised the endeavour: "As the biggest commissioner of original audio drama, the BBC continues to invest in the future of the genre.

"We think carefully about how we can bring the very best to our audiences, in ways which suit their listening habits, both on air and on demand on BBC Sounds."

Speaking on Cate's involvement, she noted: "When John Tiffany approached us with Cate's idea of recording The Fever, I knew listeners would love this brilliant example of powerful longform drama.

"I'm also really proud of the success of Limelight, and audiences are sure to enjoy Jack Lowden's compelling narration of Pretender Prince."

Reflecting on her acting journey, Cate Blanchett has previously opened up about her roles and choices.

In a previous interview with Empire magazine, she shared some insights about stepping into the action-packed world of Borderlands.

According to Blanchett: "The gun-slinging stuff was so much fun. The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of.

"I think there also may have been a little Covid madness - I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said: 'This film could save your life.'"
