A new study by credit card brand Aqua has revealed some of the best-value destinations across the UK, and one seaside city stands out for its combination of history, scenery and affordability.

Portsmouth, the south coast city known for its naval heritage and waterfront attractions, ranks among the top three cheapest staycations in the country. According to the data, a weekend getaway for two costs just £73, making it one of the most affordable options after Plymouth (£65) and Blackpool (£69). Aqua’s research factored in more than just accommodation cost — it also looked at average temperatures, rainfall and search interest across the UK. Portsmouth scored well across the board, thanks to its relatively dry climate and strong online popularity.

But the low price isn’t the only thing drawing attention, as visitors are increasingly discovering the charm of Portsmouth’s historic quarters, especially its cobbled old town.

One traveller on Tripadvisor noted that there is a “nice walk to do and view the old town,” adding that it is "very well maintained" and "gives an idea of what it was like".

The message was fondly echoed by other users, with one stating: “A lovely place for a chilled walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

For those looking to mix a bit of culture with a coastal escape, it’s a winning combination, as Portsmouth also benefits from a walkable layout and several free or low-cost attractions.

The Millennium Promenade, which connects key points along the seafront, offers a stunning coastal route for exploring at your own pace and stopping for pictures along the way.

Family-friendly highlights like the Historic Dockyard, the Spinnaker Tower, and nearby Southsea Castle give plenty of options for a two-day itinerary without stretching the budget.

The Historic Dockyard is packed with interactive exhibits and iconic vessels like HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, making it an ideal all-day stop for kids and adults. Many of the museums on-site offer combined ticket options, adding value for those planning to visit more than one.
