Travel experts have shared which of Europe’s holiday hotspots they think Brits planning their next holidays should avoid. The European travel writers showcased the most and least spoilt destinations in a handful of countries in the continent, giving readers new ideas of places to go.

St Tropez is considered to be France’s most spoilt destination by author and writer Anthony Peregrine. He spoke of how the city’s small population of 3,500 swells to 80,000 when tourists descend in the summer. Peregrine said crowds of people clog up narrow streets in the hotspot trying to find something affordable. Rather than heading to St Tropez, holidaymakers should go to other Mediterranean villages that St Tropez is “just like”, the writer told the Telegraph. Seville was labelled Spain’s most spoilt holiday spot by writer Sally Davies, who lamented how much the city had changed in 30 years, saying it had become “a different beast”.

Davies said that 60% of apartments are now thought to be tourist rentals, and the city’s streets are full of visitors rather than locals. She said that though it’s not the worst part of Spain, its former charm has been lost.

Venice is the most spoilt place in Italy, according to journalist Lee Marshall, who argued his take should come as no surprise, “if only because it has so much magic and beauty to spoil”.

Marshall blamed a “toxic combination” of affordable flights and social media influencer attention on the fact that visitors often outnumber residents two to one, not being put off by the £4 tourist levy that made three times the amount of money expected last year.

Mykonos was dubbed Greece’s most spoilt destination by writer Heidi Fuller-Love. She described the island as overrun by “out of control” illegal construction, building new hotels and beach clubs.

Fuller-Love also pointed out the extortionate rates of beach sunloungers and restaurants. According to a report from airport operator Fraport, between January and May of last year, Mykonos saw a 7% decrease in international flight arrivals.

On the least spoilt list were Moselle in France, Extremadura in Spain, Umbria in Italy, and Thassos in Greece.
