The Supreme Court today ruled that the term "woman" is defined by biological sex, rather than gender, under the Equality Act of 2010. Amid sexism claims where those who were born male claimed to have been subjected to discrimination for being females, a Scottish campaign group appealed to the court - and succeeded.

JK Rowling was in high spirits today as she took to X and exclaimed: "It took three extraordinary, tenacious Scottish women with an army behind them to get this case heard by the Supreme Court and, in winning, they’ve protected the rights of women and girls across the UK." In a show of solidarity towards the campaign group, she added: "@ForWomenScot, I’m so proud to know you." Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch also celebrated the new ruling, as she wrote: "Saying 'trans women are women' was never true in fact and now isn’t true in law, either. A victory for all of the women who faced personal abuse or lost their jobs for stating the obvious. "

She continued: "Women are women and men are men: you cannot change your biological sex. The era of Keir Starmer telling us that some women have penises has come to an end. Hallelujah!"

Dragons' Den investor Duncan Bannatyne, whose portfolio includes gyms, then spoke out on how the new ruling had impacted his business interests.

"I hope all gym owners will join me now in agreeing that single sex spaces for women means biological women. No gym should ever allow men into woman’s changing rooms."

Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who has vocally challenged transgender rights for years, chimed in to say: "From now on I don’t want to see any media outlet refer to a man in a dress who rapes, abuses or murders someone as a woman! These are NOT our crimes."

Piers Morgan took a balanced view, writing on his X account: "The consequence of today’s UK Supreme Court ruling on women/biology is that while trans people should be entitled to the same rights to fairness, equality and safety as anyone else - and I sincerely believe that - they can’t erode women’s rights in the process. End."

Then British broadcaster Andrew Neil offered his take, stating: "The Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that only people who are born female should be protected from discrimination as a woman under the Equality Act. It says much about the absurdities of our age that such a common sense statement should be regarded as a landmark ruling — or had to be taken all the way to the SC. "

The ruling also comes after a series of high profile gender wars which saw transgender criminals identifying as female after committing crimes and going on to be placed in female prisons.

Meanwhile, the likes of Piers Morgan have vociferously disagreed with those who were born male competing in women's sports, arguing that their sex at birth gives them innate biological advantages when it comes to physical strength.

Transgender campaigners have fought for the right to be included in the "women" category, but the latest law now seems to have ruled that out - at least within the boundaries of the Equality Act.
