Holidaymakers heading to Dubai have been urged to familiarise themselves with strict local laws and customs, as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warns travellers could face arrest, jail, or deportation for common behaviour considered illegal in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The FCDO has updated its ‘Safety and Security’ travel guidance for the UAE, with a strong emphasis on the ‘Laws and Cultural Differences’ section. Tourists are reminded that cultural norms and laws in the UAE differ significantly from those in the UK, particularly around public conduct, dress, and online activity.

Among the 17 key rules outlined by the Foreign Office are restrictions on clothing, public affection, swearing, and the use of social media.

Tourists are expected to dress modestly in public spaces, with women advised to cover shoulders and knees, and swimwear permitted only at beaches or pools. Cross-dressing is also illegal.

Public displays of affection, including kissing, are not tolerated and can lead to arrest.

Similarly, swearing or making rude gestures, even online, is considered an obscene act that can result in jail time or deportation. The FCDO urges special caution when interacting with police and officials, as disrespectful behaviour may escalate quickly under UAE law.

Social media users are also advised to tread carefully. Posting anything that criticises the UAE government, companies, individuals, or is considered culturally insensitive, may be deemed illegal.

This includes sharing videos or photos involving incidents in the UAE.

The warning also extends to alcohol laws. While drinking is allowed in licensed venues, being under the influence in public is a criminal offence.

In the emirate of Sharjah, just 30km from Dubai, the consumption and possession of alcohol is completely banned.

The FCDO advises all travellers heading to Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE to check the latest guidance before departure to avoid unintentional legal issues.
