Everybody wants to visit trending destinations, but sometimes, when you do, you get far more than you bargained for when it comes to the hectic crowds.
Yes, the Instagram pictures may look perfect, but they never show what it was like to stand behind them or the flocks of people wanting to take a snap of that Santorini sunset.
That’s why travel-loving TikToker @sandymakessense shared some destinations in Europe that you’ve “probably never heard about,” because the less busy somewhere is, the more you can make the most of chilling out.
According to the Savvy Backpacker, Paris is the most visited city in Europe, with over 50 million visitors a year. This is soon followed by London, with 40 million visitors, and Rome with over 35 million people flocking to the sights.
But if you want something less hectic than these very lovely - but very busy - cities, then Sandy has the spots for you. “Here are three budget-friendly destinations to avoid the crowds in 2025, starting with this underrated city break,” she shared.
Sandy continued: “If you’re looking for a colourful and cosy place full of coffee shops, flea markets, vintage shopping opportunities, and a quirky bar and art scene, add Riga and Latvia to your list”.
Riga's historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil and 19th-century wooden architecture.
Blogger Claire’s Footsteps shared that “The Latvian capital city of Riga is brimming with historic buildings, museums and attractions.” She also said it was well worth visiting for a “couple of days”.
Next up, Sandy recommended a “region in Spain that looks like it could well be in Morocco”.
She continued: “Arab cultural influences and Spanish traditions make Andalusia in Spain one of my favourite places in Europe. Haggle at the souks and admire the architecture and fun local customs.”
Lonely Planet writes: “Andalucía is a year-round destination. Long daylight hours, plenty of sun and sand, and year-round sunshine are just some of the reasons to come to Andalucía. Water sports dominate all year, with kayakers, snorkelers, swimmers and kitesurfers flocking to the beaches of the Costa de la Luz and Costa del Sol.”
Her final suggestion was to try Gdańsk and Sopot in Poland, “where you can have a very trendy, colourful and cool city holiday”.
Not only that, but it can be “followed by a relaxing Baltic spa break in one of Europe’s best spa towns officially.”
Blogger Where Goes Rose shared that Gdańsk is well worth visiting as “all the buildings are beautiful,” the nightlife is fantastic, and it’s cheap too.
