Every British person has their own opinion on what makes a perfect Sunday roast - and everyone has their own favourite part of the meal. For some, the roast potato is the star - and that includes singer and Little Mix icon Jade Thirlwall.

Speaking on the Dish podcast, hosted by radio presenter Nick Grimshaw and chef Angela Hartnett, the pop star went into great detail about her love of all things roast dinner. She prides herself on making "a very good roast potato" - but there's much more that goes into the 'perfect roastie' than meets the eye.

Refusing to gatekeep her secrets ahead of the Easter weekend, when many families will be tucking into a classic roast dinner, she said: "I part boil them in a stock first, like a chicken or a beef stock. And then I let them go cold, I fluff them and let them go cold. Then, obviously, get the oil and the butter ready. And then I just season the s*** out of it."

Jade shared that this is "the key" to any good roast potato. She added: "I hate, you know if you're in a pub and they send the roasties and it's just literally a potato that's been roasted, like, give me all the seasoning! A bit of rosemary."

Sharing her favourite, she revealed: "There's a gorgeous salt that I use by Dorset and Co. I think [it's] called a lemon and thyme salt, and it's really stunning."

Her 'fluffy and well-seasoned' roasties sound like a true labour of love - so much so that they make the perfect treat - even without the rest of the roast dinner trimmings. Jade confessed: " Sometimes I'll just make roast potatoes, and then just have it with some gravy, and that's my tea. Sometimes a bit of cheese on top if I’m feeling extra."

A YouGov poll revealed back in 2019 that roast potatoes were deemed the most popular and beloved item on a roast dinner plate. Pigs in blankets were a close second, followed by a close call on the top meat between chicken and turkey.

The FUFN singer has never kept her love of a roast dinner secret. She regularly posts about her love of the classic British meal on social media and it's often a talking point in interviews she gives.

In fact, during her chat on Dish, she explained how she'll often try to track down a roast wherever she is in the world. She said: "If I'm on holiday, I'll find an Irish pub and I'll get a roast there. Genuinely. I've found places in LA, because I'm back, that do it."

Potatoes offer several health benefits due to their rich nutrient profile. They are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fibre, including vitamin C, potassium and vitamin B6. Potatoes are also naturally fat-free, cholesterol-free and sodium-free, making them a healthy choice for many dietary needs.

It might actually be healthier to roast your potatoes when cooking them - compared to other methods like frying. Roasting uses less oil and can help retain more nutrients, especially when the skins are included.

While potatoes are a good source of nutrients, they are also starchy, so portion sizes should be considered, especially if managing carbohydrates. Focus on using different herbs and spices for adding flavour to your spuds instead of adding excessive amounts of salt.
