When it comes to the beaches in Greece, there's no doubt about their beauty. It's no wonder why the stunning country welcomes millions of visitors every year and is one of UK holidaymakers' favourite destinations. Last year Greece welcomed over 36 million tourists and if you were one of the people that missed out, well this year, visiting Greece is a must especially as one of its incredible island's has been recognised for being home to one of the world's best beaches.
While Greece boasts many islands that have picturesque stretches of sand, including the famed islands of Corfu or Crete, they are not the ones that have the spotlight on them right now. Kefalonia, located in the Ionian Sea is an absolute gem and just so happens to house Myrtos Beach, which made it onto TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards as part of the world's 'Best of the Best Beaches'.
The travel site which awards destinations based on the number of "above-and-beyond reviews and opinions" and this impressive spot is amongst the "fewer than 1%" that made it to the list.
Praising Myrtos Beach, it states: "Surrounded by tall marble cliffs and looking out onto the azure waters of the Myrtos Gulf, this stunning beach makes for a dramatically breathtaking sight. A steep and winding stretch of road will take you there—stop on your way to admire the view and catch the pink and orange hues at sunset on your way back.
"Get in early to secure both a place to park and a prime spot on the sand; the water tends to be at its calmest in the morning too. There are changing rooms and toilet facilities, a beach bar, and a few sunbeds and umbrellas you can rent."
Last year, more than 755,000 people jetted over, and you can imagine many of them paid a visit to this renowned beach. One of the visitors said: "The experience of discovering one of the most beautiful beaches in the world was a unique experience. It is worth staying at least a week to interact with the local population and enjoy the healthy and genuine foods of the surrounding nature."
As well as the world class beach, the island has many others dotted along its sandy coastline and more entertainment to offer. Argostoli, the island's capital is built around a hill and home to plenty of shops, cafes, and bars. While you stroll along its lovely streets, you might find the local philharmonic orchestra playing traditional Ionian island songs, giving you a real sense of the vibrant culture.
The island's beautiful nature goes beyond its beaches. Melissani Cave is a unique geological phenomenon, and visitors can explore the 3.5km long, 40cm wide, and 36m high wonder through an underground tunnel with a boat and a guide.
The island has so much to offer which is why it deserves a high spot on your bucket list.
