Crews of firefighters were scrambled on Thursday evening to an airfield in Wiltshire after a large fire erupted. Firefighters were called to Old Sarum Airfield in Lancaster Road shortly after 6.30pm on April 17, following reports of a "building fire".
Pictures from the scene show huge, thick plumes of smoke rising from the airfield, with residents being told to keep windows and doors closed amid fears of unknown chemicals possibly burning inside the building. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said the building had partially collapsed and a fire had spread to a nearby structure - thought to be a cafe, ITV reports.
Multiple crews were in attendance overnight, including from Amesbury and Salisbury, as well as an aerial ladder platform from Swindon.
The inferno, thought to have started at Hangar 3, was eventually brought under control by 5.45am on Friday, with some firefighters remaining to completely put out the fire.
Hangar 3 Old Sarum was forced to close down following the blaze. It said in a statement: "Due to an incident involving Hangar 3 this evening we will be closed until further notice."
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service said: "We were called at 6.38pm today (17 April) to Lancaster Road, Old Sarum to reports of a building fire.
"Crews from Amesbury, Salisbury (x2), Ludgershall alongside crew from Andover and Ringwood (Hampshire and Isle of Wight FRS) are currently in attendance.
"The building has partially collapsed and the fire is affecting an adjacent building.
"Firefighters are working hard to contain the fire and a command unit is now in attendance from Devizes.
"No casualties have been reported.
"Local residents are advised to please keep windows and doors shut and stay inside as a precaution due to smoke in the area."
