David Beckham has found himself in a spot of bother with his neighbours over a plan to erect a new barn at his idyllic countryside estate. An irate local fumed: "Why do famous people move to the country... then make silly alterations?"
The iconic footballer is reportedly seeking approval for a timber-clad barn at his lavish £6m Cotswolds home. The former England captain, who will celebrate his 50th birthday on May 2, maintains an array of bees and chickens at his rural sanctuary, which also boasts a vast lake. He has submitted a proposal to West Oxfordshire District Council seeking permission to construct an "agricultural storage barn for hay/straw and agricultural equipment".
Local resident Harriet Jones voiced her frustration in a letter of objection to the council, stating: "This is just the latest in a long line of applications to build new structures on this land, plus a giant lake. Why do famous people move out to the country and then clutter up their land with endless buildings and make silly alterations? It makes no sense."
The blueprint shows that the proposed structure is designed with a steel framework clad in timber, topped with a metal roof, and spans 10m by 5m. The planning decision is expected to be made in the coming weeks, reports the Mirror.
Back in 2016, Beckham and his fashion designer wife Victoria secured the £6m property near Chipping Norton and received the green light two years ago to convert the roof space of an outbuilding into office premises.
The couple previously landed in hot water with the locals over property developments, including an eventually scrapped plan to build a second access road to their home.
They have, however, secured permission to create a kitchen garden and glasshouse for home-grown fruit and vegetables.
A concerned local voiced disapproval to the council saying: "Many people locally indicated to West Oxfordshire Council that the increase in the residential curtilage of this property will see an ever-increasing number of buildings, and to date we have all been proved right."
Residents of Great Tew and nearby villages have criticised the ex-footballer and singer for importing a suburban feel to the rustic setting with their developments.
The Beckhams' Maplewood Barn residence is situated just over a mile from the chic Soho Farmhouse club and hotel, and approximately 7 miles from Chipping Norton. The family has generated buzz with their hit Netflix series showcasing their personal and professional life.
