A country is offering people £77,000 to move there, but there’s a major catch. While some schemes require you to restore a house or have a family, this one requires a business.
Chile has launched a program to attract international talent by offering funding to small businesses. The program also aims to provide mentorship and resources to entrepreneurs, especially in tech. The equity-free funding ranges from £15,000 to £77,000. It comes with a year-long visa and a co-working space, where recipients must work from.
To remain in Start-up Chile, participants must earn 4,000 points by mentoring others, giving talks, and attending events, which encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing.
People can apply to participate in the program, though it is highly competitive. The application includes a form with about 200 questions, a one-minute video pitch, a product or service demo, and a referral letter from someone already in the program.
Those who move on to the next stage have a 15-minute interview. The scheme has helped launch 1,600 startups.
Other countries have launched similar schemes to increase their populations. Italy offers families up to £23,000 to move to small villages of Sardinia and Calabria.
This is to help boost rural areas after young people move elsewhere for work. Applicants for this scheme need to be under 40 and able to move within three months of their application’s acceptance.
To be considered they will need to be willing to start a new business (suggestions include hotels, B&Bs, restaurants and shops) or fill an in-demand job.
