If you're planning on going for a city break to Brussels in the next few days, be prepared for possible travel delays and cancellations. UK holidaymakers heading to Belgium have been warned to expect "severe travel disruption" as strike action is set to take place across the country. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated guidance which was released on April 18, alerting travellers to planned rail strikes that could affect journeys on April 22 and April 29.
The UK FCDO wrote: "Rail unions plan to strike on 22 and 29 April. There may be significant disruption across the rail network. A general strike is planned for 29 April and may cause severe travel disruption across the entire country.
"Monitor local news and check with your travel provider regarding potential delays."
Railway workers are protesting against a series of Government reforms, including plans to raise the retirement age, implement budget cuts, increase staff flexibility, and reform HR Rail, which is the employer of railway staff, The Brussels Times reported.
There have already been 21 days of strike action which have been affecting transport services in the country.
The FCDO warned that demonstrations around the Schuman area (the EU quarter in Brussels) could impact movement and restrict access to the British Embassy and Consulate General.
While most protests remain peaceful, the FCDO said that there's still a risk of unrest or violence, stating that travellers should remain informed, follow local guidance, and "move away quickly if there are signs of disorder."
The FCDO added: "Strike action is an ongoing issue that can cause severe travel disruption across the country and affect international travel.
"Strike action may be announced at short notice and planned strike action may be extended at short notice. Strikes can coincide with demonstrations and protests.
"For regular updates on any disruption, check local news and follow advice given by your travel provider. If you are in areas where large gatherings are taking place, remain vigilant and move away quickly if there are signs of disorder.
"Avoid protests, expect delays on some major roads and follow the advice of the authorities."
