Ukraine has reponded to the US's claims that Kyiv is "90% on board" with Donald Trump's peace proposals. The senior US official who made the claims added that it now depends on whether Russia will agree to Washington's peace framework and Trump will walk away if he does not get Putin's agreement.

The unnamed official said that Ukraine's defence minister was close to agreeing a peace deal but Kyiv has since denied the claims. Ukraine's defence ministry told Sky News that it "does not make political decisions and therefore could not have made any "assessments of percentage."

It said: "We have several principled positions: we supported the US proposal for a full ceasefire back on March 11, while Russia did not support the US ceasefire proposal and continues daily strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

"Under these conditions, it is unclear how anyone could discuss or measure in 'percentages' the progress of any dialogue.

"Our key question is how to ensure the ceasefire proposal can work and be reliably monitored. We remain in constructive dialogue with our American partners and are fully committed to ending this war."

It comes after Donald Trump warned the US will "take a pass" on helping a potential deal if Moscow and Kyiv continue to disagree. This would put more responsibility on Europe to broker a deal between Russia and Ukraine.

The US President previously said: "We're talking about people dying. We're going to get it stopped, ideally.

"Now if, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we're just going to say, 'You're foolish, you're fools, you're horrible people,' and we're going to just take a pass."

US secretary of state Marco Rubio also said Washington was "just going to move on" from trying to secure peace unless there was clear progress. He said: "We need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable."

Vladimir Putin announced an Easter truce in Ukraine this afternoon. He confirmed that all military actions would "cease" between 6pm today (4pm BST) until midnight on Monday (10pm BST).

However, there is no indication whether the temporary truce will lead to a negotiation on a longer period of peace.
